Mind Your Manors

Venue: Melton Carnegie Museum

Anti-social behaviour, food quality, road maintenance, inheritance tax - these all may seem very modern concerns. However, manorial documents show they were also the preoccupations of our medieval forbears.

This exhibition explores the role of manors in administration, taxation, law and order and land ownership and demonstrates how these fascinating and often neglected documents can help with family and local history, opening a window on the past. Details of the manorial records for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland have been added to the online Manorial Documents Register so it is easier than ever to locate the information, much of which is held locally at the Record Office.

The display covers the establishment of manors after the Norman conquest through to their eventual abolition in the 1920s. Documents featured show crimes and misdemeanours such as being a 'common scold' or selling sub-standard ale and include a list of men who were failing to practice archery 'according to the statute'. The exhibition also highlights some surviving aspects of the manorial system from the layout of streets to Lords of the Manor merchandise and rights over 'fracking'.
