The Melton Fieldworkers present this evening talk by John Thomas MA MClfA

The iconic circular burial mounds of the early Bronze Age created sacred spaces which stood apart from the land where the living dwelt or farmed. What surprises us is that some of these spaces must have retained their hallowed status long enough for them to be identified and re-used as burial sites for the succession of Iron-age, Roman and Anglo Saxon societies that arrived to farm these landscapes. This outstanding dig at Cossington uncovered a 2000 year continuity of ritual significance and of communities coming together to discharge the ceremonies of death and burial which affect us all. Cossington sheds important light on the ways in which some places in the landscape are gives and retain a special identification.
